On the interior side of the northern Coastal Mountains and just south of the Stikine River
(57 degrees 45 seconds N. latitude - 130 degrees 30 seconds W. longitude) lies British Columbia's answer to a primordial landscape from a bygone era.
Was this type of landscape typical of Canada in the past
millennia or was it an aberration?
Conical 'Eve Cone' (pictured) is one of 2 notable cones from geologically
recent eruptions located in Mount Edziza Provincial Park. Its last
eruption was during the Holocene period, which describes the last
12,000 years of earth's history, since the last Ice Age. It is
classified as a Cinde Cone
To this day there are still only 2 ways to access this region of the park - a 30 km
walk or fly. There are 6 major volcanic
belts in western Canada including: Anahim, Chilcotin, Garibaldi, Stikine,
Wells Gray-Clearwater and Wrangell.
