The Point Prim Lighthouse

Point Prim Lighthouse is the only round brick lighthouse in Canada.

The oldest lighthouse in PEI, it was designed and built in 1845 by Isaac Smith, the same architect who designed Provincial House in Charlottetown.

We put the challenge of trying to find out why the lighthouse was round.  Donna Johnson in PEI rose to the challenge and provided us with the following information.

"I was at a workshop with two people who are affiliated with the Point
Prim lighthouse and they said the only reason the lighthouse is round is
that it was the architecture design decided upon when it was built. The
brick had been made locally and the outside wasn't covered the first
years but a few years after construction the brick started to deteriorate
so they covered over the brick."

I guess that not all "mysteries" are really Mysteries of Canada!   Thanks Donna!
